Something Blue

Something Blue

We have all heard the Old English rhyme, “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, A Sixpence in your Shoe.” Traditionally, brides carry four (or possibly five) objects with them on their wedding day to represent the objects mentioned in the rhyme and for good luck. These are tokens of love often given by your mother, sister, other relatives, and bridesmaids, but more recently, brides are giving them to themselves, planning ahead to ensure each item is covered. According to the wedding website The Knot, “Something old represents continuity; something new offers optimism for the future; something borrowed symbolizes borrowed happiness; something blue stands for purity, love, and fidelity; and a sixpence in your shoe is a wish for good fortune and prosperity, although this remains largely a British custom.”

Something Blue is one of the most fun elements because it allows for the most flexibility. Brides are getting creative and finding new and innovative ways to include something blue on their big day. If you’ve figured out everything else but you’re stuck on this one, don’t be! A quick Pinterest search will reveal all kinds of fantastic ideas. Here are some of our favorites.

You can always splurge on a pair of blue shoes, right? While this idea isn’t a new one, it never fails to impress. Adding a pop of color peeking out from underneath your dress not only adds interest but it also creates fun and unique photos for your wedding album.

Don’t want to do something as bold as wearing blue shoes? Then wear white, but find a blue marker and ask your bridesmaids to sign their names on the bottom of your shoe or your hubby-to-be to write a sweet note. Make sure to use permanent marker!

If your bridesmaid dresses happen to be blue, sew in a swatch of the fabric into the underside of your dress. If you chose attendant dresses in a different hue, no worries! A similar idea is to sew your wedding date onto your dress using blue thread.

Have you heard of the bridal pin? This is a way to incorporate each of the four objects in one place. Add charms onto the pin and place it on your wedding gown. Such a simple idea yet extremely creative!
